Long Time No Hear?!?

April 30, 2013 at 5:22 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 2 Comments

Hi my fellow readers!!! Its been quite some time (like last school year) since I posted to my blog. I honestly thought that my readership was at zero, but since this is something I am very enthralled in and I’m scouting out internships (possibly a job) , I will continue with my posts to improve my writing and build on to my online portfolio. Its something about phones that I absolutely love and I will press forward with doing so. If there is anything you would like me to review, always feel free to comment. You should hear from me within the next week. Thanks for reading. 🙂

Galaxy Note and Words With Friends Review

I would definitely say that my love of phones derived from my sister’s obsession. If she doesn’t have it then more than likely nobody else does. She’s like the go to person for breaking news on the latest in phone releases. For quite some time now she has been eying the Galaxy Note by AT&T.

I for one wouldn’t compare this to your average smartphone. Its big enough to replace a PDA for Christ’s sake, if people still use those nowadays. The only thing that’s missing is the jumbo stylus. Aside from my ridicule I’m sure if it’s good enough for her then there are tons of other potential buyers for this phone.

Let’s check some specs shall we. Now even phonearena.com agrees with me on the bulkiness of it, but on the plus side it’s the only noted con. The Galaxy Note has a 5.3 inch display, which means more LCD for the visually impaired like me. I wonder if that’s why she’s going for it (fyi her bifocals are slightly thicker than mine). One thing I love about AT&T is their 4G network. While T-Mobile claims to have to highest speeds, AT&T has no need to brag about what they can do.

This phone is in the heaviest grade of phones, weighing in at almost 6.3 ounces. One of the biggest advantages is the talk time, 26 hours. With the stand-by time at 40 days, you won’t have to charge your phone for weeks with light use. The Note has the highest quality camera, at 8 megapixels. You haven’t heard the best part yet. It’s a 16 gigabyte phone. You don’t see those too often, but if it’s Samsung they normally have this storage capacity. While the phone may be a nice size for a paper weight, it definitely over compensates for tipping the scales.

One app that I have been playing like forever is  Zynga’s Words With Friends, our app of the week. This game resembles Scrabble in a way but the awesome thing about it is its Scrabble on steroids. The object of the game is to place words strategically to get the most points. You can play against friends on Facebook, Twitter, and via email invites. Of course I always win.

HTC Rhyme and Skout Review

This week I’m on the HTC Rhyme by Verizon. It puts me in the mind of the Samsung Exhibit II in reference to dimensions and overall arrangement of hardware like the cameras and the touch sensitive buttons. Included with the phone is a set of tangle free headphones with an attached microphone for voice calls. I would love to test that theory. The Rhyme is available in plum and white but its just something about the plum that appeals to the eyes.  The color is truly captivating.

One of the newest innovations that I have seen with this phone is the docking feature. Its fully functional while charging on the dock. I don’t think anyone would want to struggle with holding it to their face while making a call though. Other than that it’s the ideal size for your standard mid –sized smart phone, at 4.7 ounces.  You have 6.8 hours of straight talk time and 410 hours of standby time.

With internal memory you have 4GB, which is not bad at all and an 8GB SD card that is included with phone purchase. With newer smartphones you have autofocus, which is the next best thing if not better compared to a professional camera. The Rhyme also has a 5 megapixel camera on the back housing.

In the updated version of the Rhyme glitches have been fixed with dock mode, a few buttons have been changed around and in call volume is more adjustable both on and off the dock. If I switched to Verizon this phone would absolutely win me over. I was won over by the metallic plum and easy to use interface.

The app of the week is Skout. I have been using it for some time (don’t judge me).  I met my current boyfriend there and we have been together for almost four months now.  Anyhow, it’s a dating app that enables singles to meet other singles.  Instead of flirting you can just get acquainted with new people and possibly make friends. I would advise caution though if you decide to meet someone in person. Safety is always in numbers and you should always notify family and friends beforehand. Remember that.

Ipad 3 Release: iCare Why?

By: Carlissa Robinson

This week I would like to take a break from phones and cover the latest in tablets. Everyone has been all over the Ipad 3, but the reality is, the releases show little improvement that I deem nowhere near significant. Any other tablet can compete with the Ipad (like the Samsung Galaxy Tab) but Apple is the self-proclaimed elite smart ass of a company that portrays that image that if it isn’t Apple it’s nothing. I’m just saying, what’s the point?

Newer technology is one thing, but the only major game changer to the Ipad series was the introduction of cameras placed on the front and back of the device. With newer versions of the Ipad being released, sales have skyrocketed from re-release to re-release as if something has changed. As I mentioned in my post about Iphones, Ipads are rocking in the same boat. People only go out and buy the new version to flaunt that they have it.  Otherwise I see no reason. But let’s get to some stats shall we.

One thing I have noticed is that now phone companies are selling tablets with a bundle internet service to make more money. It’s cheaper to buy a tablet outside of a phone company if you ask me. Besides that there are no huge differences as I stated before about the Ipad. The one thing that caught my eye was the difference in size of an Ipad 3 with just wifi opposed to wifi with 4g. The 4g Ipad is ten grams heavier but who would even notice that?

Apple is infamous for being the “trend setter.” I never understood why Apple products don’t have an SD card slot until I realized that to own an Apple you have to be sophisticated and to be sophisticated you have to sync everything (which is a complete bust). Why not do away with Sims cards as well and emulate Verizon while you’re at it?

Tests have shown that the Ipad 1 has the fastest booting speed and internet speed in multiple tests, yet Apple claims that the Ipad 3 has the best retina display, 4g LTE speed, and trumps its earlier versions in overall performance. The retina display may have impacted the speed for the Ipad 3 but it’s not too far behind the Ipad2. But it’s still a huge disappointment if you ask me (and an apparent waste of money for consumers).

I’m glad I didn’t fall victim to Apple. I bought a second generation Ipod touch and I wished it would’ve had a camera on it. Guess what happened. The very next year Apple re-released a newer version of the Ipod touch with a camera (two cameras at that). You can only imagine how pissed I was. Nowadays you have to wait for the best in product development. In some cases this could take years if the products are even worth the hype. You will never catch me camping for the next day release of anything. It’s all just another sales pitch to increase revenue.

Social Media Rollercoaster: Trayvon Martin

Wrongfully Slain Teen Faces Injustice

By: Carlissa Robinson

The national tragedy of Trayvon Martin’s death has stricken everyone with grief, disbelief, and sorrow that stemmed into something more than just another story.

Many were devastated in the murdering of Trayvon Martin, although it took three weeks for the news and neighbor interviews to surface.

On that fateful night of February 26 in Sanford, Fl., Trayvon was walking from a convenience store (with a bag of skittles in his pocket, a can of tea, and a cellphone he was using at the time) just a few blocks away. Wearing a hoodie, George Zimmerman, member of the neighborhood watch patrol, had suspicions that Martin was up to no good. Zimmerman contacted the local police department and was told to stand down and let law enforcement handle the situation.

What protects Zimmerman until this day are the Stand Your Ground laws in the state of Florida. If one feels threatened then he has the obligation to defend himself, even if it means taking an innocent kid’s life. The people who claim self-defense under this law are innocent until proven guilty, but he is simply innocent according to the state of Florida. He was let free and is still at large (but more so in hiding).

Although Zimmerman is alleged to be studying criminal justice in hopes of joining law enforcement, it was against the rules of the neighborhood watch for him to conceal weapons of any kind. Zimmerman disregarded the police and thought it would be a heroic act to take down his first criminal. But the reality is, Trayvon was just a high school kid visiting family in that neighborhood.

You don’t have all the facts. You’re lost…You’re finding out things as you go along.” said Nicholas Lomax.

Social media in a way misconstrues many details of this story. The delayed news updates also allotted time for people to spread anything but the truth. One rumor stated that Martin was innocent while another says he left Zimmerman with a broken nose and a gash to the head, which lead to Zimmerman’s act of self-defense.

There have also been rumors that this was a quarrel among races, but Oliver, Zimmerman’s friend, and also a man of color, says that George was not racist. If Zimmerman was not racist, what could explain the 46 occasions in which he called police to alert them about teens walking through the gated community? In every report the teen was African American.

New details have surfaced that Martin was suspended from school for possession of marijuana and he was reportedly wearing a gold grill at the time of his death. What does this any of this mean in the case of an innocently slain teen? Media’s objective is to promote stories that make money and they cashed in Martin’s wrongful death and defaced his reputation for their propaganda.

Not all hope was lost in Martin’s death. It was not overlooked by the nation. Days after news spread a petition (demanding justice and the arrest of Zimmerman) from Martin’s parents circumvented social networking sites like Facebook, civilians started to rally, organize vigils in his memory, and both celebrities as well as working class citizens started a movement on Twitter known as the “Million Hoodie March.”

The “Million Hoodie March” is the way of the public commemorating Martin’s death by wearing a hoodie and marching in his memory. Cities like Los Angeles started this movement and social media sites like Twitter brought about more awareness to the community. Celebrities endorsed the march by wearing a hoodie and posting it as a Twitpic to exemplify that any random person walking down the street can be targeted just as Trayvon Martin was.  University of Memphis alumna Sarah Maurice said,

“It’s sad that it had to come to this…Why is it that a million people had to march to symbolize that this is wrong?”

America was outraged by The Sanford Police Department’s ruling and Florida’s Stand Your Ground Laws. U of M sophomore Stevie King says,

“It’s ridiculous how somebody could go out free after shooting an unarmed kid. That kind of vigilantism…is just like lynching.”

This movement expanded from social media to cities around the nation. On Monday, March 26, a candle light vigil was held here in the Bluff City at the National Civil Rights Museum in his memory.  Supporters wore hoodies, t-shirts embellished with the words “I AM TRAYVON MARTIN”, and held signs in commemoration.

“The world has to realize that we still have social inequality issues and we have to attack them head on, we can’t slip them under the rug.” said Maurice.

Although it seems like an issue that is often ignored, inequality still exists, and what vigils like this one did was bring forth what’s been lurking in the dark for centuries-racism. Some will argue that it is nonexistent while others address it and proclaim that while it may seem transparent it is still there.  IT THRIVES. IT BREATHES. IT MANIFESTS.

“A guy like me that would’ve taken the law into his own hands would be in jail right now” said Lomax.

What Trayvon Martin’s death did was bring more awareness to not only the nation but the globe. Social networking sites helped thrust his story full speed into the ears and eyes of human kind. There will no longer be a time when stories like this one go unheard. No longer will innocent children like Martin go on into dust without a voice. This is more than just another story, this is a movement.

Galaxy S II Review and Temple Run Android Update

Upon first impression the Galaxy S II seemed like another impression of the IPhone, but internally it could probably beat it. The body is .33 inches, which is thinner than most. On a 4g network things are sure to go a bit faster, but it’s a disclaimer because I’m aware of T-Mobile’s crappy network, as I am one of those customers  that literally inherited my phone line when I disconnected myself from my mother’s account. As you saw in my LG Thrill post, AT&T could rip T-Mobile’s speed any day.

It is smaller than most dimension wise and it weighs 4.09 ounces, which isn’t pretty bad. Another thing I love about this phone is the 8 megapixel camera. The average smartphone only has a 2 or a 3 megapixel versus the Galaxy S II. This phone gives you a touch of quality and professionalism while shooting high definition pictures and videos.

In addition T-Mobile fans will be delighted to hear that this phone has a talk time that’s appeasing to all, with almost three times the talk time of your standard device. Imagine having a phone that lasts 18.3 hours of your day, without a single charge, or having a standby time of almost 30 days (that’s a freaking month)! That’s not all folks, it gets much better. The internal memory is 32 gigabytes, not 16 or 4 like those other phones, but enough memory to download hundreds of apps and music, without the hassle of an SD card.

This phone has the best of everything: high definition camera, super amoled display ( lighter display with less reflection), more than sufficient amount of memory, a light weight, and a 4g network (disclaimer).  AT&T has faults as well, with a number of dropped call complaints. Every phone and every company has its faults, but this phone is one of the best out there on the market, not that I agree with the carrier. Let’s just say it’s the right phone but it happens to be with the wrong company.

So Temple Run released a few days ago on Droid, and I like other customers have had a series of problems with the app. There have been complaints of glitches and other technical issues. When you search for the app itself it takes time to sort through fan apps and things of that sort. I was a bit incorrect on my prior post and I would like to thank my friend from  Just Reboot!, another wordpress site.

HTC Status and Facebook App Review

The HTC Status also known as the ChaCha is the phone revolutionized for social networking, with a button on the bottom right that connects you directly to Facebook. With this phone you have the standard 5 megapixel camera on the back, facetime on the front, an 800 megahertz processor, and the latest OS operating system 2.3.3 Gingerbread. The weight of the phone is 4.23 ounces, which is rather light compared to the average. This phone reminds me of a pocket sized calculator, the portable version of a TI-83 if there were ever one this small.

The overall form of this phone reminds me of the Motorola Charm, with a full touch QWERTY UIOP keyboard, and without the rear touch pad, but with a slight curvature that fits the face perfectly. The buttons are a reasonable size and they are spaced as so you will not encounter too many typos if any at all. There’s a bit a futuristic feel with the slim call and end buttons, which is one of the features that adds to overall aesthetics, but if its touch screen it’s kind of pointless.

While on the subject of this screen, its 2.6 inches wide. Although it’s not the biggest of screens, it’s a decent size for phone to screen ratio. One of the features that I failed to mention in prior posts is the Gorilla glass that the newer smart phones have. Gorilla is just another way of saying scratch proof, resistant to those constant slip ups when you drop your phone, water proof, nearly invincible (if you can think it your screen can probably resist it).

The Facebook share button enables users to instantly share pictures, view feeds, post status updates, and comment on Facebook friends’ statuses. Along with the Facebook button feature, you can view your friend’s picture and status when receiving a phone call.

There’s no need to download an app to Photoshop pictures with hardware already installed (talk about convenience). That makes me want to buy it. I was sold at the Facebook share button. Now if only there were a phone with both Facebook and Twitter share buttons.

Of course the app of the week is Facebook. While we are on the subject of social networking, Facebook has  845 million monthly users, with 425 million monthly users who use the mobile app. Facebook connects you with friends, family,  celebrities, fan pages, music, games, events posted by friends, and much more.

Iphone Schmiphone

Everyone is raving about the Iphone 4s, better yet the expected Iphone 5 this summer. What is it about the Iphone family that makes it so popular? I honestly don’t see whats all the fuss about. As a previous Iphone 3gs owner, I was not ecstatic when I discovered that everything needs to be synced to the phone. You would think that when you get a new phone everything is automatically imported, but no that’s just not the case.

There are a few qualities that deem the Iphone prehistoric (hence similar designs in newer models), like the difficulty in creating ringtones (explaining why every owner has the same default tone), or syncing data from your SD card. Oops, I forgot, Iphone is not SD card accessible. What drove me to get the Iphone was due to the fact that I had an Ipod Touch at the time and I had grown tiresome of constantly totting two devices, but once I made the switch, I had poor service, and realized that GSM is a gimmick. The only feature that I enjoyed was the music library, something that I could’ve enjoyed with my Ipod, and without having to spend unnecessary money.

The biggest load of crap that I discovered was that I could not send nor recieve picture messages unless I bought an app that enabled me to. Every phone on the market, even the simplest of non-smart flip phones have the capability to send picture messages. What the hell is that about? Furthermore, Apple consumers have had issues with flash support for years because of Apple’s choice to be different from other phone companies.

Now before I continue my tirade, I will admit that the Iphone has evolved in overall appearance, and syncing with the Ipad or Macbook is a resourceful feature, but the biggest issue is the app market. The Apple Store versus the Play Store (newest name for Android market) is in no way competition. Long time Apple customers may not see a problem with buying an app if they’re not willing to jail break, but there are thousands more of apps on the Android market, that are free. I have tested every major feature on the Iphone and I can honestly say that every one of them can be out staged by an Android, even the high quality video that everyone boasts about. Frankly, I see Iphones as more of a trend. It may sound absurd but it seems like people buy phones just for the Apple emblem. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

This is where you the readers come in. What is it that you absolutely love about the Iphone 4s? Have any of the major features changed in the latest model? Do you prefer Iphones or ever owned one? If so, I would like for you to leave your responses in the comments below.

LG Thrill and Twitter Review

This week I am reviewing the LG Thrill. Now this phone is anything but ideal in terms of height. It’s what I call a surfboard, due to its eyesore length, at 5.07 inches. But what I call a surfboard, phone companies describe as candy bar form (a bit of exaggeration on their end). The LCD display follows suite to the dimensions of the phone, at 4.3 inches.  While the display is a bit on the larger side, it would suit the visually impaired just fine. On the plus side, the width is reasonable, at nearly half an inch.

The coolest feature on the LG Thrill is the 3D capability, the latest craze in smartphones. You can watch, record, and play back videos in high definition 3D, all without actually wearing 3D glasses! The weight is just a tad above average, at 5.9 ounces. While standby (idle) time is 13 days , a day of talk time will only give you six hours to gossip. That’s not even half of a day! There’s so much to cover in the course of twenty-four hours. But if you’re used to smartphones, you most likely have a car charger, a work wall charger/USB cord to plug in while your boss isn’t looking, and anytime charger for your daily outings.

The internal memory enables room for 8000 megabytes. There are  1000 megabytes in a gigabyte so that’s 8 gigabytes of memory, like your standard flash drive. With that kind of space you won’t need a SD card unless you have a ton of songs you want to listen to or assign to contacts. An overall grade for this phone would be a B-. It’s acceptable, I guess.

The app of the week is Twitter. Now Twitter may be the pinnacle of change for the younger generation, but everyone should get involved. Tweets are statuses of 140 characters or less that Twitter users post to let the world know how was their day or what are they currently doing. Twitpics are pictures uploaded to Twitter. The Twittersphere is the Twitter universe of users and their acts. While Twittter may seem irrelevant to older generations, it is the newest way that professions like journalism are evolving in a unique light. Nowadays professionals use Twitter for things like self-promotion and breaking news. While business is just one way to utilize Twitter, fellow Twits, or Twitter users also mention popular topics like global issues that trend and that can affect change when Twits unify and become the voice of change.

Blackberry 9900

Have you noticed that every major celebrity has a Blackberry? From Chris Brown to Jake Gyllenhall and yes even Beyoncé, the ever popular Blackberry Curve has swept the celebrity scene. Being a former owner I would have to say that the reason why the Blackberry franchise is the number one phone for business oriented people is due to its simplicity.

Due to issues all too common with Blackberry devices, the coined term “crackberry” arose from crackberry.com. Despite technical difficulties, Blackberries continue to sell like any other phone. Issues that I had with my Blackberry Curve 8520 are as follows: random phone resets, phone freezes, ear jack outlet shortage, issues connecting to email after factory reset, and no Words with Friends app (the ultimate deal breaker). The limit of downloadable apps I what really catapulted my move to Android. In addition, with Android you can customize your own ringtones versus starting from the beginning of the song.

Unlike Androids, Blackberries give the owner the option to update applications, has a user friendly interface, and you can assign personal ringtones for every contact so you know what calls to ignore (something I miss about Crackberries.)There is no Android market and few free applications to download from Blackberry App World, yet somehow its popularity has skyrocketed over recent years.

The standard structure for a Blackberry is the touch sensitive button centered beneath the 640 x 480 screen, with two call and menu keys on the opposing sides. The newest to the Blackberry family is 2.6 inches too thick and weighs nearly 4.6 ounces. While the newest twist introduces a stainless steel plate on the sidings of the Blackberry 9900, it seems as though RIM (trademark name for Blackberry) is imitating an Iphone 4s. One thing I would like to see on a Blackberry is of course compatibility with the Android market and I would be a happy camper. Face time would be a great feature as well for business calls.

Previously, scrolling on web pages was once a headache, but now the mouse icon is easier to use with the new touch screen feature. Call quality, the overall price, and phone improvements get an extreme of reviews from great to horrible but that’s with every phone. Android is not for everyone, but Blackberry is a start if you’re just a bit technologically inept or prefer to keep it simple. If it’s good enough for Queen B it should suffice for anyone, unless you’re a Droid addict.
